Fifth Symposium on Strait Crossings in Norway
June, 2009/HSBE

The fifth symposium on Strait Crossings was held in Trondheim, Norway from June 21 through 24, 2009. The symposium was organized by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and supported by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). The first symposium was held in 1986. The second, the third and the fourth symposium were held in 1990, 1994 and 2001, respectively.

190 researchers/engineers participated in this symposium from 25 countries. Keynote speakers in 2 plenary sessions and general speakers in 16 technical sessions made 84 presentations, and discussed major aspects on strait crossings, subsea tunnels, immersed tunnels, bridges, maintenance and operation, etc.

From Japan, 6 researchers/engineers participated in this symposium and made 4 presentations. From HSBE, Dr. Ikuo Yamada, the leader of Inspection and Structural Engineering Group, Long-span Bridge Engineering Center, made a presentation entitled “Practical Management for Cable Band Bolts on Suspension Bridges during Operation.”

In addition, the technical visit was made to the Coast and Harbour Research Laboratory, which is located near NTNU in Trondheim. The tsunami impact due to the glacier fall was tested by using the large-scale water facilities. The visitors understood the need to reduce the natural disasters, including the global warming.
