Shin-Onomichi Bridge is a cable stayed bridge. The center span length of the Bridge is 215 m and it is as long as that of Onomichi Bridge. During the planning of the Bridge, it was considered that the center span length was the same of Onomichi Bridge and the bridge type was also selected as the same type, because the Bridge was constructed parallelly apart only 55 m from Onomichi Bridge which was the first constructed cable stayed bridge in Japan. Considering the accordance with Onomichi Bridge as a regional symbol, the type of Shin-Onomichi Bridge was selected to erect 7 cables parallelly at the tower.
The construction of this Bridge was finally started in the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges, and this Bridge was completed about 30 years after the completion of Onomichi Bridge.
