Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridges, crossing Kurushima Strait (width: 4 km) between Ohshima Island and Imabari, are the first three continuous suspension bridges in the world. The girder section of the Bridges is much slender because flat hexagonal girder section was applied for the Bridge.
Third Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge is the longest bridge in the route and the girders both side spans of the Bridge are not suspended by hanger ropes, considering topographic conditions and restrictions of the highway route. In addition, tunnel anchorage was adopted for the anchorage of the Bridge in Imabari not to largely change the surrounded area around the anchorage.
