    Development of Magnetic-Wheeled Gondola

    Many high-rise steel structures, such as towers of suspension bridges, stacks and oil reservoir tanks of power plants, are primarily protected from corrosion by coating. Therefore, periodic inspection and repair works are indispensable.

    Suspended gondola is widely used for these operations, however, it is sensitive to wind and its motion decreases operability. However effective some anti-swing devices by vacuum or magnetic pads may be, they are less than adequate in termes of efficiency, because touch and draw operations of sticking gears becomes necessary when the gondola changes its location.

    This paper introduces the development of a gondola with magnet-enveloped wheels, which allows all-direction movement by wheels sticking to wall, together with its steering function.

    This swing-free gondola tremendously improves operability, efficiency as well as safety.

    Design of Superstructure for Tatara Bridge

    Tatara Bridge has a long-span cable-stayed deck with a center span of 890 m and PC deck on its both side spans, especially its center span is far beyond the ordinary concept on adaptable span. In design major subjects were conquered: verification with aerodynamic and seismic stability, buckling stability of deck, which is governed by axial force, verification with buckling stability on pylon, deck, and whole structure, and total static stability of long-span structure. In addition, extensive studies were made on structural analysis considering material and structural characteristics of steel and PC, as well as on structural details of geometric corner of pylon, cable support, and steel floor system bearing fatigue. This paper reports these structural studies and outline of design on superstructure.

    Erection of Tatara Bridge Superstructure (Report II)-Erection of Steel Deck and Cable-

    Tatara Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a composite deck of the steel and the prestressed concrete, which is located nearly midst of Nishi-Seto Expressway. This paper repots the works on erection of steel deck block by block, including cable erection and accuracy management in the works.

  • 来島大橋大型風洞試験報告

    Report on Large Scale Wind Tunnel Test of Kurushima Bridge

    Full model wind tunnel study was done on the structural systems of completion and erection stages of Kurushima Bridge. The study was composed of two wind tunnel tests: one with a large size full model to study aerodynamic motion of whole bridge structure in high accuracy, and the other with wide area terrain model to study surrounding topographical influence. As a result, Kurushima Bridge proved no problem with both vortex excitaition and gust response. In addition, it also proved an effective measure by cross hunger system during erection stage, though it might be unstable without a countermeasure.
