    Design of Shock-Absorbing Device of Tatara Bridge, Kurushima Bridge for Ship Collision

    Shock-absorbing device is sometimes installed on offshore foundations to mitigate impact of ship collision. Based on researches on ship navigation records and tidal phenomena, Tatara Bridge and Kurushima Bridges were decided to install mitigation device on 2P and 3P for Tatara, and 3P and 5P for Kurushima. This report shows design conditions of device on ship collision and physical (natural) properties, and outline of device solution.

    Work on Steel Pipe Sheet Piles for Shin-Onomichi Bridge 2P

    新尾道大橋は、本州四国連絡道路尾道・今治ルート(西瀬戸自動車道)の本州側の起点となる尾道から尾道水道を渡り向島に至る中央支間長215mの5径間連続鋼斜張橋である。下部工工事は、橋台1基(1A) 橋脚4基(2P,3P,4P,5P) からなり、平成8年9月に現地着手し、平成10年6月に無事竣工した。なお、6A橋台は別件工事(向島彦ノ上工事)にて施工した。ここでは、2P鋼管矢板締切工事における硬岩盤の置換掘削の施工を中心に下部工工事について報告する。

    The Shin-Onomichi Bridge is a 5-span continuous steel cable-stayed bridge with a 215m center span to link Onomichi, where the Nishi-seto Expressway starts, and Mukaishima island. Substructural work includes one abutment, 1A, and four piers, 2P, 3P, 4P and 5P. The work was initiated in September 1996 on site, and terminated in June 1998 without any failure. The 6A abutment was built in another work (Mukaishima Hikonoue Work). This report introduces the work focusing on an operation on hard rock excavation for 2P steel sheet pile.

  • 吊形式橋梁箱桁のトラス・横桁接合部の疲労挙動

    Properties of Fatigue at Connections between Transverse Ribs and Truss Members in the Box Girder for Suspended Bridges

    It is reasonable to apply steel pipes to truss members in box girder diaphragm of suspended bridges, because of the member tends to be designed through its slenderness ratio. As to such steel pipes, connections with transverse ribs have to be durable against fatigue and to be so simple structures that fabricating them is easier. So three specimens with connections consisted of inserted ribs were tested in fatigue. And the results show us about property of fatigue cracks at inserted ribs which are cruciform or one plate, and about way of welding for inserted ribs. We also obtained knowledge about occurrence of fatigue cracks at slit around bottom of trough rib near the connection.

    Measured Data on Initial Deflection of Stiffener to Tower and Girder

    The data were measured on initial deflection of stiffeners used to towers for suspended structures and main girders. Measurement was done on the Kurushima and Tatara bridges for the tower, and on the steel box deck of Tatara. The data were collated and compared to the specified values in the buckling design and fabrication.

    Results of Static Loading Test on a Full-Sized Steel Deck Specimen

    To simplify the steel deck structure for bridges, now being studied is thickening the deck plate, making trough ribs bigger, and reducing the number of the transverse beams. Although such structures would make fabricating process simpler, they should be taken into account the local stress concentration caused by the deflection of longer trough ribs. Hence, a loading test was done with using a full-sized specimen and a truck. Through this test we obtained knowledge on stresses at trough rib joints connected on site, and at cross structure of trough ribs and a transverse rib.
