Plan for Electric and Telecommunication Facilities of Nishiseto Expressway–Reduction of Traffic Control Facilities-

Kunio Nakashima, Nobuhito Ishikawa, Koji Akeno

The electric and telecommunication facilities of Nishiseto Expressway were studied as a master plan in 1995 and an implementation plan in 1996, and those were designed in detail. However, we were required to reduce those facilities in consideration of the traffic actual situations and the regional characteristics of Nishiseto Expressway because it is difficult for the operation of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority to expect the profitability. We altered our plans including reconsidering the level of traffic control in 1997. This paper describes those circumstances and an outline of plan for the electric and telecommunication facilities of Nishiseto Expressway.

The Tatara Bridge has the world's longest center span of 890 m, hence the behavior of the cables greatly affects on the stability of entire structure. Especially, corresponding behavior between the cables and the deck was focused on from the first. Therefore, the vibration test was carried out to confirm dynamic characteristics of the bridge. This report summarizes this test.

Pavement on Deck of Tatara and Shin-Onomichi Bridge

Hitoshi Komatsubara, Masai Kaneko, Yasuhito Manabe

Decks of the roadways for Tatara and Shin-Onomichi bridges were paved based on the guss asphalt, which had used in previous works. In addition, the pavement on pedestrian and light motor bike ways with a width of 2.5 meters, which were set on both sides of roadways of Tatara and Shin-Onomichi bridges, were worked with the MC・SMA (Methyl Cellulose Stone Mastic Asphalt), instead of the ordinary guss system, after the study including test works. This paper reports design and work of these pavement system.

Design of Superstructure for Shin-Onomichi Bridge

    Akira Moriyama

The Shin-Onomichi Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with an overall length of 546 meters including a center span of 215 meters. Since the bridge would be constructed along with the Onomichi Bridge (built in 1968), which was a symbolic structure of the Onomichi city, the new bridge design focused on a harmony with the existing bridge and surrounding environment. The main features on bridge design were as follows: i.Solution considering aesthetic, ii.Solution securing aerodynamic stability on the parallel bridges, iii. Study on span-continuation for approach spans, iv.Study on support structure of main girder for longitudinal movement, v. Study on rigid annexation of pylon to girder, vi. Selection of cable material, vii. Study on anticorrosion method inside the deck, and viii. Study on bearing system. This papar reports these features in outline.

Report on Superstructure Work of Shin-Onomichi Bridge

    Hitoshi Komatsubara, Masai Kaneko

The Shin-Onomichi Bridge started its substructure work in September 1996, girder launching in December 1997, and finished closure of girder in November 1998. Since the bridge was constructed alongside of the Onomichi Bridge, the aesthetic considerations were given to the design. Moreover, a new approach was taken toward the cost reduction by adopting both PC steel strands and dehumidifying device inside the deck for anticorrosion. The bridge went through a complicated erection process in restriction by topography and land usage under spans, such as spanning over the National Highway No.2 and No.317, JR Sanyo railway lines, and Onomichi Waterway, as well as in restriction of work schedule behind the delay by land and fishery compensations.
