Long-span Bridge Engineering Center

In conjunction with the opening of the Nishi-Seto Expressway on May 1, 1999, construction of the long-span bridges in the three routes of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway was completed and main tasks of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority (former body of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway; HSBE) became operation of the three routes. The long-span bridge engineering technology was accumulated through the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project for 40 years since the beginning of the survey by the Ministry of Construction and JNR and for 30 years since the establishment of the Authority. In order to inherit and enhance this technology that is a valuable Japanese asset, the Long-span Bridge Engineering Center (LBEC) was established.

On April 1, 2021, due to the reorganization of HSBE, the LBEC embarked on a new cross-sectional role in HSBE’s expressway operations utilizing emerging digital technology and asset management , in addition to LBEC’s conventional tasks: (1) improvement of maintenance technology, (2) technical support work, and (3) dissemination of technical information.
